Task: Clean out your purse/briefcase

Matthew 12:43-45 (also Luke 11:24-28)

“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first."

The house was unoccupied, swept and in order.  A lot of times we think that is enough: Looks good on the outside!  But Jesus reminds us to clean the inside of the cup first (Matthew 23:25-26), to cleanse the secret filthy areas of our hearts and lives that are not so visible. The devil will deceive us into thinking we have done our part - say by confessing our sins. But if we don't follow up with a plan of repentance and replace it with good habits, the demons will come back to haunt us and get entangled in the same sin. When Jesus washed his disciple’s feet he said, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” It's not enough to just dust off the dirt off our brother's feet, but to get deeper and more intimate in their spiritual welfare.

I like thinking of the principle of "One In, One Out", but in a spiritual context.  When you remove something (as in repentance of sin) or clean a space out of clutter, we must replace it with something Godly!  Just like God didn't just "sweep/wipe" our sins away. He "washed" us in the blood of Jesus!
